  • A squeaky garage door
  • The door does not open smoothly
  • You notice wear and tear on the springs
  • Broken cables on the garage door
  • A loud noise on the garage door
  • There is a gap in your torsion spring
  • The garage door closes faster than usual
If you are experiencing any of these things, you need to call us right away. A broken spring can leave you vulnerable to security threats because it means that your garage door is not as effective as it was before. Let our technicians help you to fix it. They know exactly what to do so that it can start to function normally again.

Broken Garage Door Spring

If the spring on your garage door is broken, it is not always wise to lift it manually. If there is only one torsion spring, it can be much more difficult to get it open with a broken spring. These types of door are usually very heavy. They can weigh up to 300pounds so it would be quite disastrous if these types of doors fall on someone while they are trying to lift it. If your garage door is a little bit different and it has two torsion springs, you may be a bit more fortunate. If only one spring is broken, the door may be able to still function on one spring. If not, it will definitely be much easier for you to lift it. Even though it will not be as heavy, it does not mean that you should not be careful. As a matter of fact, the best thing that you can do is get professional help. We can dispatch a technician to your location very quickly so we can take care of any spring issue that you are having.

Sectioned Garage Door vs Solid Garage Door; Pros and Cons

There are differences between solid garage doors and the sectioned ones. Each has their pros and cons and each type is appealing in its own way. Our Complete Garage Door Service crew is sometimes asked; which is best? Our answer is this; what do you want from your garage door? Read this page and then decide for yourself. It’s really just a choice and it’s yours to make.

Solid garage doors

Solid garage doors are making a comeback of sorts. They were more common in the 50s and 60s when that’s all that was available. These doors are made of one piece construction as opposed to a frame and several panels and sections like the sectioned doors. Solid garage doors were mainstream back “in the day” and were mostly lifted and lowered by hand. Some homeowners are now installing these one piece, solid garage doors to achieve that retro look from decades ago. In modern times you can now operate them with an opener system but since the whole door tilts upward, the area in front of the garage door should be clear of people, pets, cars and other items.

Sectioned garage doors

These came into use after the solid, one piece doors. As stated above, your sectioned garage door has panels and sections attached within a frame. Instead of tilting upward or downward, your sectioned garage door rolls up and into the garage, usually with the help of an automatic garage door opener system and remote. One big advantage of these rolling garage doors is that you don’t have to keep the area in front of it clear. This is because the door rolls up and into the garage through the track system and does not tilt outward where it can hit whatever or whoever is in front of it. It’s no secret that most buyers looking to secure a home in today’s real estate market prefer these sectioned garage doors. Builders and new home community developers comply by not giving their buyers a choice; the sectioned doors are automatically included in the purchase.

You don’t have to follow the crowd

Does all this mean that you are stuck with your rolling garage door? No; not at all. Tilt-up doors are still available everywhere garage doors are sold and installed. Many younger people have never even seen this type of door before as the roll ups are so common in urban settings. If you are interested in either type of door, we encourage you to call a local garage door repair shop and speak to their staff. Call one that eagerly answers questions and gives free price quotes, too. An established shop can field any questions that you may have and even come out to your place to see how feasible a change might be. Remember, you can still have automatic garage door opener service with a solid garage door; you no longer have to manually open or close it.

DIY: 5 Helpful Tips for Installing Your Garage Door Opener

by Grant Morgan

If you are in the market for a new garage door opener, you have probably considered installing it yourself. While do-it-yourself veterans may not think twice before tackling an installation, it is most likely the first time you have attempted something like this. Here are five hints to help save time and make your garage door opener installation go smoother.

Read All the Instructions
Take the time to read and internalize the instructions before you start assembling anything. Reading the instructions thoroughly may seem like a waste of time, but doing so can save you trouble in the end.

For example, if you have a new construction home or have never had a door opener before, you will need to purchase and install a header and supports. If you were unaware of this, you would be surprised when you came upon that step in the instructions. Read those instructions!

Use the Proper Tools
Garage door openers generally do not include any tools, so having the proper tools will speed up your install considerably. Don't try to "make do" with whatever tools you have on hand. This machine should last for years, but not installing to the supports properly or jerry-rigging any connections leaves you liable and open for safety hazards and insurance claim denial.

This doesn't mean you need to go buy a full set of tools just to install your garage door opener; be frugal and borrow what you can. Borrowing (and returning) tools is a great way to meet a neighbor and by properly installing your opener, you have the peace of mind that you can use it without holding your breath.

Get Help
No matter how handy you are, you just can't complete some jobs quickly by yourself. Openers are long, awkward machines and having a second pair of hands available, even if they just steady the ladder, can be invaluable. There is no shame in having someone assist you with this assembly, and your man-card won't be taken away either. So call up a sibling, a neighbor or that one guy who seems to be able to fix anything and ask if you can borrow them for a couple hours.

Watch an Installation Video
If the illustrations in the instruction manuals aren't working for you, there is a wealth of user-made videos on video sites, such as YouTube or Vimeo, that show basics of garage door installation. Many garage opener manufacturers have made official installation videos as well. When in doubt, take a trip around the internet to find an instructional video.

Be Patient
This is possibly the hardest hint to follow, but having patience while you assemble, install and test your opener will save you the headache of redoing steps and losing parts. If you are impatient with the installation process and with yourself for not being Bob Villa, you run the risk of skipping an important step. Being patient helps you be safe and allows you to see any potential mistakes or hazards that may occur.

As always, safety comes first, so when you are installing your garage door opener, be sure to have enough space and the right safety apparel and equipment so you don't get hurt. Installing a garage door opener can be a fun adventure if you take your time, follow the instructions and use our helpful hints. Good luck!
